Selim Sazak, MIA 15, writes on nuclear nonproliferation COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog
Selim Sazak, MIA 15, writes on nuclear nonproliferation COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Everyone at the Office of Admissions wanted to wish our PA, Selim Can Sazak, MIA 15, a big congratulations on co-authoring an article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists! His article asks, âWill there be a next generation in the fight for nuclear nonproliferation?â SIPA News sat down with him to discuss the article and the question it poses for the future of nuclear disarmament. Tell us a bit more about this article. Basically, the article draws on my background from being in the trenches of the nonproliferation cause. Since the end of the Cold War, nonproliferation has become a secondary cause. In particular, we are facing an alarming deficit when it comes to organizing and mobilizing for tomorrow. There are only a few youth programs, mostly run by small staffs and on very limited budgets. When the going gets tough, these programs are the first to get cut. One of the co-authors on the paper actually left her job in such an operation that was scaled back. So we started thinking about how this problem can be fixed. There is a big problem now, many leaders of the nonproliferation community are aging; most are in their 60s or 70s. This is the final time window for a new block to come in. We are falling behind. What are some of the reasons you think the younger generation is not as involved in nonproliferation? This is a question that has sparked some fierce debates and in my opinion, there is no single answer. I believe that an important reason is that the end of the Cold War changed the way the nuclear threat is perceived. Until very recently, nonproliferation was not only a strong movement but it was also a âcoolâ cause; working to keep global peace and avert a global nuclear war appealed to young people in a way it does not anymore. Now, development is trendy, social enterprise is trendy. Thatâs where the resources are. In a way, young people are drawn to causes where their efforts are more tangibly rewarded. Not surprisingly, security is given a backseat. Itâs harder to come by younger people in security jobs, especially outside the public sector. So what does the article propose? Quite simply, we are trying to point that the battle against nuclear proliferation will take more than a few decades to win, and that if no one is left to carry on the fight, it wonât be won at all. We discuss some of the challenges the nonproliferation community has been facing in reaching out to the younger generation. In this context, we see a unique role for the United Nations to start such a conversation. We believe that it is time for all stakeholders in the nonproliferation causeâ"governments and international organizations, think-tanks and nonprofits, activists and advocates, the young and the oldâ"to engage in a forward-looking conversation on how to cultivate the next generation. We are already talking with senior leaders, major donors, and weâve been in touch with the UN to see how can push this idea forward â" we need a structured dialogue to identify our problems and devise a common strategy towards solving them. The future of nuclear weapons is a global issue. En suring that the public and our leaders is fully educated in this issue and would be capable of navigating this future safely is an interest shared by everyone, regardless of whether they are seeing a valid role for nuclear weapons in the future of international security or not. We think that this is a common denominator that can bring us together in a conversation and it is our hope that our article would contribute to moving us forward in that direction. Youâll graduate in May. How does this piece fit into your future goals? My main interest is in solving problems, exploring new ideas, testing them in real-life situations. Some of my classmates here are the smartest people I know, and putting their smarts into innovative policies can make a difference. Iâm graduating in May and thatâs what Iâm walking away with: Using SIPA, and the many things I have learned here, to bring change where itâs possible. Read the QA in its entirety here.

Healthcare Questions and Article Critique: 1. Incentive compensation is a major practice that has continually been adopted by healthcare organizations, especially for managers. Most of these organizations use this tool as a means of rewarding employees financial for outstanding performance. Generally, incentive compensation involves the use of monetary reward for managers to attain specific established goals. Positive Attitude Free Essays
Dennis Brown once said, ââ¬Å"The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude. â⬠As someone who always tried to keep a positive attitude in life, it is hard for me to imagine a world where people are not as optimistic about everyday deals. After hitting my Junior year in IB; however, the effects of the stress load really began to affect my attitude towards life. We will write a custom essay sample on Positive Attitude or any similar topic only for you Order Now However, even though I barely just began this experience, I can truly say that a positive attitude can go a long way. As we explore this idea, weââ¬â¢ll first discover the benefits of being positive, next look at the negatives of losing hope, and finally learn how to keep life beautiful with a beautiful attitude. An anonymous person with a great outlook on life once said, ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got to take the good with the bad, smile with the sad, love what youââ¬â¢ve got, and remember what you had. Always forgive, but never forget. Learn from mistakes, but never regret. â⬠Though, this person did not disclose their name, their point is simple and clear. Staying positive is better than being negative. It is scientifically proven that staying positive can help decrease stress levels, increase lifespan, and can actually cause a greater resistance to the common cold and many other diseases. Ph. D. Doctor Martin Brofman discovered the benefits of keeping an upbeat attitude at all times. Brofman was diagnosed terminal cancer in 1975 and was told that he only had two months to live; two months before he would be forced to confront with death. Determined to make the most of his last few weeks, he refused to let anything get him down by keeping a positive attitude at all times. When the sky looked rainy during the time he was sick, the sun would come out at his command. He would imagine his cancer cells each dying off, one at a time; he would insist that everything would be okay. Two months later, he went back to visit the doctor that declared him terminally ill. The doctor, in return, had laughed in joy and stated that perhaps they had made a mistake. Brofman later quotes that ââ¬Å"In order to release a symptom, one must release the way of being associated with it. Thus, the process of healing implies a process of transformation. Along with the positives of being positive, there are also several consequences for being negative. According to scientific research, negative attitude can decrease lifespan, cause stress levels to rise drastically which can cause many medical problems such as heart attack, hypertension, diabetes, and can create an unpleasant future. There are six main types of negativity: the miserable type, the silent killer, the drama queens, the woe is, the paranoid type, and finally the trigger type. These all have one thing in common: they tend to see many things in a negative light. According to Winston Churchill, ââ¬Å"The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. â⬠In the end, the question asked is: would you rather see the difficulty or the opportunity? If the answer is to see opportunity, there are several ways to create a more positive attitude. Firstly, gratitude. If you are grateful towards things that you have, then you tend to have a positive outlook towards your life. It is said that Gratitude is the beginning of all virtues. The next step would be choosing happiness. Be happy; be positive; even when everything is looking rough, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Thirdly would be substituting problems for challenges. Donââ¬â¢t think of it as a problem, think of it as a challenge. Fourthly, view life as a journey; not a long, weary trek in the end where you go to sleep dejected and exhausted. Think of life as a ride, a ride with twists and turns but nevertheless an honest to goodness fun ride. Next, when you wake up in the morning, think about what a wonderful day it is. A positive start will nearly always end happily. Lastly, stop and smell the roses and appreciate even the little things in life. As Maurice Setter once said, ââ¬Å"Too many people miss the silver lining because they are too busy looking for the gold. â⬠Often times, people take things for granted and do not look at the positive side of life. However, as shown previously, a positive attitude can create not only great health but also help the people around you. In this sense, a positive attitude is necessary for one to feel truly happy in their lives and necessary for one to truly live the fullest they can. How to cite Positive Attitude, Essay examples

50 Great Argumentative Essay Topics for Any Assignment
50 Great Argumentative Essay Topics for Any Assignment SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips At some point, youââ¬â¢re going to be asked to write an argumentative essay. An argumentative essay is exactly what it sounds like- an essay in which youââ¬â¢ll be making an argument, using examples and research to back up your point. But not all argumentative essay topics are created equal. Not only do you have to structure your essay right to have a good impact on the reader, but even your choice of subject can impact how readers feel about your work. In this article, weââ¬â¢ll cover the basics of writing argumentative essays, including what argumentative essays are, how to write a good one, and how to pick a topic that works for you. Then check out a list of argumentative essay ideas to help you get started. What Is an Argumentative Essay? An argumentative essay is one that makes an argument through research. These essays take a position and support it through evidence, but, unlike many other kinds of essays, they are interested in expressing a specific argument supported by research and evidence. A good argumentative essay will be based on established or new research rather than only on your thoughts and feelings. Imagine that youââ¬â¢re trying to get your parents to raise your allowance, and you can offer one of two arguments in your favor: You should raise my allowance because I want you to. You should raise my allowance because Iââ¬â¢ve been taking on more chores without complaining. The first argument is based entirely in feelings without any factual backup, whereas the second is based on evidence that can be proven. Your parents are more likely to respond positively to the second argument because it demonstrates that you have done something to earn the increased allowance. Similarly, a well-researched and reasoned argument will show readers that your point has a basis in fact, not just feelings. The standard five-paragraph essay is common in writing argumentative essays, but itââ¬â¢s not the only way to write one. An argumentative essay is typically written in one of two formats, the Toulmin model or the Rogerian model. The Toulmin model is the most common, comprised of an introduction with a claim (otherwise known as a thesis), with data to support it. This style of essay will also include rebuttals, helping to strengthen your argument by anticipating counterarguments. The Rogerian model analyzes two sides of an argument and reaches a conclusion after weighing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Both essay styles rely on well-reasoned logic and supporting evidence to prove a point, just in two different ways. The important thing to note about argumentative essays as opposed to other kinds of essays is that they aim to argue a specific point rather than to explain something or to tell a story. While they may have some things in common with analytical essays, the primary difference is in their objective- an argumentative essay aims to convince someone of something, whereas an analytical essay contextualizes a topic with research. If all goes well, your essay could be in a book like this! What Makes a Good Argumentative Essay? To write an effective argumentative essay, you need to know what a good one looks like. In addition to a solid structure, youââ¬â¢ll need an argument, a strong thesis, and solid research. An Argument Unlike other forms of essays, you are trying to convince your reader of something. Youââ¬â¢re not just teaching them a concept or demonstrating an idea- youââ¬â¢re constructing an argument to change the readersââ¬â¢ thinking. Youââ¬â¢ll need to develop a good argument, which encompasses not just your main point, but also all the pieces that make it up. Think beyond what you are saying and include how youââ¬â¢re saying it. How will you take an idea and turn it into a complex and well thought out argument that is capable of changing somebodyââ¬â¢s mind? A Strong Thesis The thesis is the core of your argument. What specific message are you trying to get across? State that message in one sentence, and that will be your thesis. This is the foundation on which your essay is built, so it needs to be strong and well-reasoned. You need to be able to expand on it with facts and sources, not just feelings. Research A good argumentative essay isnââ¬â¢t just based on your individual thoughts, but research. That can be citing sources and other arguments or it can mean direct research in the field, depending on what your argument is and the context in which you are arguing it. Be prepared to back your thesis up with reporting from scientific journals, newspapers, or other forms of research. Having well-researched sources will help support your argument better than hearsay or assumptions. If you canââ¬â¢t find enough research to back up your point, itââ¬â¢s worth reconsidering your thesis or conducting original research, if possible. How to Come Up With an Argumentative Essay Topic Sometimes you may find yourself arguing things you donââ¬â¢t necessarily believe. Thatââ¬â¢s totally fine- you donââ¬â¢t actually have to wholeheartedly believe in what youââ¬â¢re arguing in order to construct a compelling argument. However, if you have free choice of topic, itââ¬â¢s a good idea to pick something you feel strongly about. There are two key components to a good argumentative essay: a strong stance, and an assortment of evidence. If youââ¬â¢re interested and feel passionate about the topic you choose, you'll have an easier time findingevidence to supportit, but it's the evidence that's most important. So, to choose a topic, think about things you feel strongly about, whether positively or negatively. You can make a list of ideas and narrow those down to a handful of things, then expand on those ideas with a few potential points you want to hit on. For example, say youââ¬â¢re trying to decide whether you should write about how your neighborhood should ban weed killer, that your schoolââ¬â¢s lunch should be free for all students, or that the school day should be cut by one hour. To decide between these ideas, you can make a list of three to five points for each that cover the different evidence you could use to support each point. For the weed killer ban, you could say that weed killer has been proven to have adverse impacts on bees, that there are simple, natural alternatives, and that weeds arenââ¬â¢t actually bad to have around. For the free lunch idea, you could suggest that some students have to go hungry because they canââ¬â¢t afford lunch, that funds could be diverted from other places to support free lunch, and that other items, like chips or pizza, could be sold to help make up lost revenue. And for the school day length example, you could argue that teenagers generally donââ¬â¢t get enough sleep, that you have too much homework and not enough time to do it, and that teenagers donââ¬â¢t spend enough time with their families. You might find as you make these lists that some of them are stronger than others. The more evidence you have and the stronger you feel that that evidence is, the better the topic. Of course, if you feel that one topic may have more evidence but youââ¬â¢d rather not write about it, itââ¬â¢s okay to pickanother topic instead. When youââ¬â¢re making arguments, it can be much easier to find strong points and evidence if you feel passionate aboutour topic than if you don't. 50 Argumentative Essay Topic Ideas If youââ¬â¢re struggling to come up with topics on your own, read through this list of argumentative essay topics to help get you started! How to Argue Effectively A strong argument isnââ¬â¢t just about having a good point. If you canââ¬â¢t support that point well, your argument falls apart. One of the most important things you can do in writing a strong argumentative essay is organizing well. Your essay should have a distinct beginning, middle, and end, better known as the introduction, body and opposition, and conclusion. This example follows the Toulmin model- if your essay follows the Rogerian model, the same basic premise is true, but your thesis will instead propose two conflicting viewpoints that will be resolved through evidence in the body, with your conclusion choosing the stronger of the two arguments. Introduction Hook Your hook should draw the readerââ¬â¢s interest immediately. Questions are a common way of getting interest, as well as evocative language or a strong statistic Background Donââ¬â¢t assume that your audience is already familiar with your topic. Give them some background information, such as a brief history of the issue or some additional context. Thesis Your thesis is the crux of your argument. In an argumentative essay, your thesis should be clearly outlined so that readers know exactly what point youââ¬â¢ll be making. Donââ¬â¢t explain all your evidence in the opening, but do take a strong stance and make it clear what youââ¬â¢ll be discussing. Body Claims Your claims are the ideas youââ¬â¢ll use to support your thesis. For example, if youââ¬â¢re writing about how your neighborhood shouldnââ¬â¢t use weed killer, your claim might be that itââ¬â¢s bad for the environment. But you canââ¬â¢t just say that on its own- you need evidence to support it. Evidence Evidence is the backbone of your argument. This can be things you glean from scientific studies, newspaper articles, or your own research. You might cite a study that says that weed killer has an adverse effect on bees, or a newspaper article that discusses how one town eliminated weed killer and saw an increase in water quality. These kinds of hard evidence support your point with demonstrable facts, strengthening your argument. Opposition In your essay, you want to think about how the opposition would respond to your claims and respond to them. Donââ¬â¢t pick the weakest arguments, either- figure out what other people are saying and respond to those arguments with clearly reasoned arguments. Demonstrating that you not only understand the oppositionââ¬â¢s point, but that your argument is strong enough to withstand it, is one of the key pieces to a successful argumentative essay. Conclusion Conclusions are a place to clearly restate your original point, because doing so will remind readers exactly what youââ¬â¢re arguing and show them how well youââ¬â¢ve argued that point. Summarize your main claims by restating them, though you donââ¬â¢t need to bring up the evidence again. This helps remind readers of everything youââ¬â¢ve said throughout the essay. End by suggesting a picture of a world in which your argument and action are ignored. This increases the impact of your argument and leaves a lasting impression on the reader. Key Tips A strong argumentative essay is one with good structure and a strong argument, but there are a few other things you can keep in mind to further strengthen yourpoint. Focus When youââ¬â¢re crafting an argument, it can be easy to get distracted by all the information and complications in your argument. Itââ¬â¢s important to stay focused- be clear in your thesis andhone in on claims that directly support that thesis. Be Rational Itââ¬â¢s important that your claims and evidence be based in facts, not just opinion. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s important to use reliable sources based in science and reporting- otherwise, itââ¬â¢s easy for people to debunk your arguments. Donââ¬â¢t rely solely on your feelings about the topic. If you canââ¬â¢t back a claim up with real evidence, it leaves room for counterarguments you may not anticipate. Make sure that you can support everything you say with clear and concrete evidence, and your claims will be a lot stronger! Whatââ¬â¢s Next?
